Description

Hester Clark Almshouses, located in Leominster, are almshouses that were originally founded around 1735 and rebuilt in 1874 by the architect Haddon. The building is constructed of yellow brick with ashlar detailing and features a plain tile roof with a central gable, two circular brick end stacks, and a decorated twin central stack.

The exterior is a single storey with a four-window range, showcasing three-light ashlar mullion and transom windows with sashes and coloured leaded upper lights. The two central windows have ogee heads beneath moulded hoods, a polychrome brick tympanum, and a "Dutch" gable that includes an enriched niche containing a figure and a tablet inscribed with the phrase, "He that gives away all before he is Dead, Let em take this Hatchet and knock him on ye head." The entrances are located on either side of the central windows, featuring moulded semicircular ashlar arches with keyblocks and enriched imposts, leading to vestibules with twin 20th-century casements. To the left and right, there are round-headed nine-panel doors in beaded cases beneath polychrome brick semicircular arches.

The fronting wall is made of yellow brick with blue brick coping, and it includes piers with moulded ashlar capitals topped with ball finials. A tablet on the wall commemorates the foundation by Hester Clark in 1735 and the rebuilding by subscription in 1874, with Haddon as the architect and Smith as the builder. The interiors have not been inspected.
