Description
This is a cow house located about 25 yards north of Sutton Hall, dating from the mid- to late 18th century. The building features a coursed sandstone plinth and lower storey, with a brick gable on the south side and a timber-frame upper level that has woven plastered panels, topped with a corrugated iron roof. It is arranged in three short bays, oriented roughly northeast to southwest. The upper level has two rows of square panels; the lower row is made of wattle and daub, while the upper row consists of woven lathes. There is a plain doorway on the southeast side, with a loft entry above it. The structure has raking strut trusses made from thin scantling. The southwest gable displays five prominent pigeon flight holes at the apex. To the northeast, the remains of a demolished cider house are indicated by an oak chamfered 18th-century door surround. Sutton Hall is not included in this listing.
