Description

Pantall's Cottage is a house that may date back to the 14th century, with later extensions. It features a timber-framed former hall range and a cross-wing, with the southern part constructed from sandstone rubble. The roofs are covered with concrete tiles, and there is a stone external stack with brick shafts located at the center of the north side of the cross-wing. The building has a T-plan layout, with the main hall oriented northeast to southwest, a cross-wing at the north end, and an 18th or 19th-century extension at the south end that likely replaced a second cross-wing.

The cottage has two storeys, except for the southern part, which has one storey and an attic. The northwest elevation displays a symmetrical arrangement of windows in a 1:2:1 pattern, corresponding to the cross-wing, main range, and extension. Most windows are mid-20th-century casements, with the exception of a pair of mid-19th-century casements on the left side of the main range, one of which features leaded lights, and a gabled dormer with a 2-light early 20th-century casement on the extension. The entrance is located in the right-hand return of the cross-wing.

The frame of the building consists of four panels high in both northern sections, with struts coming from the corner posts of the cross-wing, which is prominent due to its larger size, jettied upper floor, and the criss-cross pattern of intersecting struts in its northwest gable. The southern part has an applied frame effect that is one panel high above the rubble walling.
