Description
The Merrick monument and its enclosing railings are located about 8 yards south of the south porch of the Church of St Bartholomew in Thruxton. This Grade II listed chest tomb commemorates William Merrick, who died in 1824. The chest tomb is made of sandstone ashlar and features a deep moulded base, hipped capping with moulded edges, and rectangular side panels, which are flanked by fluted pilasters. The railings surrounding the tomb are made of wrought iron, designed with twisted spear-head bars and a central urn-finial to the north. These railings were possibly added in 1845, following the death of Merrick's wife, Elizabeth.
