Description
The gateway, attached bridge, and moat platform retaining wall of Bishopstone Court Farmhouse date from the late 16th century, with the retaining wall from the 16th century and later, and the bridge from the 18th century. The gateway is made of dressed sandstone and is located on the outer edge of the moat east of Bishopstone Court Farmhouse. It consists of two stone piers that were once connected by a moulded arch, which has since been demolished. Each pier features pilasters with moulded bases and cornices that wrap around the piers, which are topped with pyramidal cappings that are now significantly eroded. The 18th-century bridge is constructed of coursed rubble and has a single segmental arch with a plain parapet. The retaining wall is also made of coursed rubble. The entire structure is surrounded by a water-filled moat.
