Description
Hardwick House is a house that incorporates former stables, dating from the 15th century, with extensions from the 16th and 17th centuries, and some alterations from the 18th century and late 20th century. The building features a timber frame with painted brick and rendered infill, topped with a concrete tile roof. It has an L-shaped plan, with limbs extending to the south and west. The western limb contains remnants of a 15th-century cruck open hall, while a former stable block extends to the north from the northeast corner.
The north front includes a gabled cross-wing to the left, which is partly obscured by the former stable block. The main range is two storeys high and has four three-light casements above six windows, most of which are two-light casements. The entrance, located to the left of the centre, features a 20th-century gabled and tiled porch with a 20th-century ledged and boarded door. The framing consists of four square panels high in the former stable, while most of the rest has two square panels high to the first floor. Inside, there are at least three cruck trusses, which are heavily smoke blackened in the roof space.
