Description
A barn, stables, and adjoining garden wall, dating to the 16th century with substantial rebuilding in the early 18th century, and further alterations in the mid-19th and late 20th centuries. The building has an L-shaped plan, incorporating a seven-bay barn, a two-bay former house, and a roughly five-bay stable range. The barn is constructed of handmade brick, timber framing with weatherboarding on a rubble base, with corrugated asbestos roofs. Two south bays of the barn are later additions. It features wagon bays with opposed cart entries and double doors in the third and sixth bays from the south end. A two-bay timber-framed wing adjoins the center of the west side, and a single-storey wing is attached to the sixth bay from the north end. Internally, the barn largely retains four-panelled framing from sill to wall-plate, with some alterations. The end trusses have collar and tie-beams with struts, and the intermediate trusses have tie-beams with two pairs of raking struts and three tiers of trenched purlins. Some of the timber is from the 16th century and has been reused. The former house, adjoining the north end, has three bays across two levels. The east elevation of the former house retains an original mullioned-and-transomed window, a four-panelled door with a cambered head, and an inserted double doorway with a timber lintel and a 20th-century metal door. The interior has been altered, but has a large fireplace at the rear. The stable has roughly five bays and two levels, with openings having cambered heads on the north elevation. These include four ground floor windows, a loft opening, and two stable doors, one with a transom light and a central glazing bar. A single-storey wing adjoins the east gable end, with a gable-end parapet topped by a ball finial. A garden wall, constructed of handmade brick with ashlar coping, links this wing to Eardisley Park, enclosing the farmyard. This wall is approximately 10 feet high and 40 yards long.
