Description

Number 1 and the stables attached to the rear is a house and stables dating from the 16th century, which was refronted and extended in the late 18th century, with some alterations made in the mid-19th century. The building features a timber frame with rendered infill on a coursed rubble plinth, clad in painted brick under a slate roof. The structure is arranged in an L-shape, with the house extending to the south and the stables to the east.

The west front of the house is two storeys high with an attic, which is illuminated by two gabled dormers. There are three windows, all of which are glazing bar sashes set under segmental heads. On the ground floor, there is a similar window to the left and a 19th-century shop front to the right, featuring a central glazed door beneath an over-light. This shop front is adorned with wooden pilasters and scroll brackets supporting a moulded cornice. The central entrance has a pilastered wooden doorcase with an open pediment, an overlight, and a six-panel door.

The rear range of stables includes a coach house at the east end, which is characterized by a seven-bay arcade supported by cast iron columns. The framing of the front range is visible in the north gable, consisting of two square panels high on each floor with curved angle braces. This section was formerly jettied at the front, and the truss above features three struts to the collar.
