Description
Squatters Cottage is a house dating from the 18th century. It features light scantling timber-framing with plastered wattle-and-daub panels, most of which have been replaced with red brick infilling. The roof is thatched with gabled ends and covered in corrugated-iron sheets. There is a large brick stack at the left end with a detached brick shaft.
The cottage has a 2-cell plan, with direct entry at the center of the south front leading into a larger room that is heated by a large fireplace on the left gable end. The smaller bay on the right contains a small unheated room and a winder staircase that rises from the principal room.
The exterior is one storey with an attic. The south front features a plank door to the right of center and a 2-light casement window to the left, both with glazing bars. There is a small attic window in the east gable end and a large brick stack on the west end with a detached brick shaft. The rear is blind, and the box frame has large panels and tension braces at the east end.
Inside, the principal room has a chamfered cross-beam, a boarded ceiling, and a large fireplace with a timber bressumer. The winder staircase is located in the right bay, rising from the main room. This cottage is depicted on the Ledbury Enclosure map of 1814 and is noted as a rare, largely unaltered small 2-room plan 18th-century timber-framed dwelling.
