Description

Callow Croft is a house dating from the late 16th century, with alterations and extensions made in the mid-17th century. It features a timber-frame structure built on a rubble base, with painted brick and rendered infill, topped by a plain tiled roof and a large rubble stack at the rear. The building has an irregular L-plan, with the 17th-century addition at the rear creating a broad T-plan. It is built into a hillside, resulting in a single storey and attics at the rear, while the front rises to two storeys and attics.

The front elevation includes a tall three-light cross-window to the left and two-light casements to the right, positioned in a full-height, projecting stair tower. At the base of the tower, there is a projecting porch with a panelled door set in an ovolo moulded surround, topped by a two-light transom light. To the left of the porch, there is a single-storey 20th-century extension. The north elevation features tall cross-windows to the hall, while the south elevation has two gables and three 20th-century leaded light windows. A later porch at the rear includes a plank door in a moulded surround, topped by a flat hood supported by carved brackets, and some moulded bargeboards.

Inside, the ground floor kitchen showcases ovolo and hollow moulded beams with converging stops. A dog-leg staircase from around 1700 features twisted balusters, a moulded handrail, and a panelled door bound by iron strap hinges. The first floor, which was originally a large hall but is now subdivided, retains ovolo and hollow moulded beams supported by moulded jowl posts. The right room has a restored stone fireplace in a moulded surround with a four-centred head, while the rear parlour features ovolo moulded beams and a brick fireplace.
