Description
The Church of St Mary is a parish church located in Kington, dating from around 1300, with significant alterations made over the years. It is constructed of sandstone rubble and features a plain tile roof, with shingles on the spire. The church includes a nave, north and south aisles from the original construction, a chancel that was rebuilt in the early 14th century, a Decorated south chapel dating to around 1320, an early 14th-century south porch, and a tower topped with a double-broach spire that was rebuilt in 1794. An outer north aisle was added around 1874.
The nave, which was rebuilt in the early 14th century, has arcades of five bays supported by octagonal piers and double-chamfered arches. One original lancet window remains in the south wall, and a 13th-century window has been reset in the north wall of the outer aisle. The chancel features a group of three stepped lancets on the east side and six smaller lancets on the north side.
Inside, there is a round arch with roll moulding leading from the tower to the south aisle, and a Norman circular font adorned with rope moulding and an incised zig-zag pattern. Notable monuments include alabaster effigies of Thomas Vaughan, who died in 1469, and his wife Elena, located on a tomb-chest with ten alabaster angels holding shields. There is also a tablet commemorating William Matthews, who died in 1688, featuring columns and two standing putti at the top, along with 18th and 19th-century commemorative tablets.
