Description

Barn. Dating from the 17th century, this barn is located approximately 25 metres north-east of Tregate Castle Farmhouse. It is a timber-framed structure with a sandstone rubble plinth and sandstone rubble refacing, topped with a corrugated metal roof. The barn has a rectangular plan, aligned north/south, and includes a forward projecting porch on the east side with a lean-to giving a catslide roof. There are seven bays in total, with a weatherboarded gable to the porch and a threshing floor in the third bay from the west.

The interior features collar-and-tie-beam trusses with inclined struts, as well as three pairs of purlins. The porch has three queen struts to the collar and V-struts in the gable. The framing extends from sill to wall-plate over four panels. Gable ends and four bays of the east side are constructed of rubble. An additional bay has been added to the north end, incorporating a loft over a cowhouse, all under a continuous wooden roof structure.
