Description

The Church of St John Baptist is a former parish church that is now partly roofless. The north wall of the nave dates back to the 12th century, while the rest of the structure, including the chancel and former north vestry, is from the 13th century and was restored in the 20th century. The nave, which used to have a south porch, now has a chancel and a north vestry that serves as a porch. The roofless nave features two window openings at the eastern end of the north wall: a single round-headed light from the 12th century on the west side and a trefoiled light from the 13th century on the east side. There are also two similar 13th-century single-light windows flanking a segmental-pointed-headed doorway on the south side.

The chancel has a large, late 14th-century traceried window on the south side, which is damaged at the head and sill. This window has four lights with cinquefoil ogee heads above a traceried transom, and trefoiled lights below. It is an interesting feature, likely significant, and is related to a restored window of the same type at Pembridge Castle. The east window contains two cusped lights and a central circle in plate tracery. Inside the chancel, there is a 20th-century roof. Notable fittings include a 17th-century pulpit with four-panelled sides and primitive incised decoration, plain floor slabs from the late 17th and early 18th centuries, and a brass chandelier that is partly from the 15th century and partly from the 19th century, donated by Ivor Bulmer Thomas. This church is soon to be vested in the Redundant Churches Fund. It is an unpretentious country church that was overlooked by the Victorians and retains much of its pre-Reformation character, including large areas of thin protective rendering.
