Description

Caldicott Farmhouse is a farmhouse that likely dates back to the 16th century, with extensions from the 17th and 18th centuries, and alterations from the 19th and mid-20th centuries. It features a timber-frame and sandstone rubble construction, with plaster and weatherboard finishes, Welsh slate roofs, and brick and rubble stacks. The building has an L-plan that was later enlarged into a T-plan, with the main facade facing roughly east.

The east elevation is divided into two sections: the left side is from the 16th century and the lower right side is from the 17th century. It has a mix of 2:1 windows, primarily consisting of 2-light mid-19th century casements and sashes. The left section includes a canted mid-19th century bay window on the left and a gabled porch on the right, which contains a 16th-century nailed and studded door with strap hinges set in a chamfered door frame featuring a depressed 4-centred arch and a slight ogee. The right section has three ground floor windows and a central first floor 8-pane sash. A small area of close-studded timber-framing is visible at the first floor level on the west side of the southern part.

The rear wing to the west was extended into a granary in the 18th century and was weatherboarded in the mid-20th century. Inside, there is 17th-century plasterwork with mouldings around the ceiling beams and strap work decoration in the south ground floor room. The heavy ceiling beams include some with half-pyramid chamfer stops. Evidence of weathering in the current kitchen indicates the position of the outside wall to the west prior to the 18th-century extension.
