Description
Llanrothal Court is a former farmhouse, now a house, with a core dating back to the 14th century. It was extended with cross-wings in the 15th or 16th century, and subsequently altered in the 17th and late 19th centuries, with further changes made in the late 20th century. The house is timber-framed with wattle-and-daub infill, though much of the exterior has been refaced with sandstone rubble, with parts of the upper floors in rendered brick. The roofs are slate. The plan is broadly H-shaped, with a rear external stack to the central block and additional stacks at the junctions with the cross-wings. A doorway in the central block indicates the former location of a through-passage. The building has two storeys, attics, and cellars. The south-east wing, at the rear, has a lower ridge level. The main front features a central block flanked by the gable ends of forward-projecting cross-wings, with a window arrangement of 1:3:1. The windows are mainly 2- and 3-light cross casements from the 19th and 20th centuries, with cambered heads on the ground floor. The left-hand doorway has a gabled porch with curved brace insertions and a ledged door. A 2-light cusped window is located at the rear of the central block, and another similar window is blocked and obscured by a stack. The timber-framed south-east wing features close-studding and square panelling, along with a 6-light diamond mullioned window on the ground floor. Pigeon holes are visible in the gable end. Inside, there is a restored late 17th century dog-leg staircase with splat balusters. Traces of a blocked doorway with a segmental head are present in the south wall of the central block.
