Description
The Meyrick Memorial, located approximately 6 meters north-west of the north wall of the Church of St Giles, is a tomb slab set within a railed enclosure. It dates from around 1837 and was restored around 1941. The memorial is made of ashlar stone and features wrought iron railings. The slab is plain and inscribed, while the railings are adorned with spear heads and lotus-heads on the standards. This memorial commemorates Llywelyn Meyrick, who was the only son of Samuel Meyrick of Goodrich Court and Samuel Rush Meyrick. The Meyrick family were noted collectors of arms and armor, with Samuel Rush Meyrick being the author of "A Critical Inquiry into Ancient Armour" published around 1824. He was knighted by George IV for his work in reorganizing the Armouries at the Tower of London and Windsor. The Meyrick Society, which became a respected academic group, is recognized as a small circle of enthusiasts in the study of arms and armor. In 1940, the memorial was repaired by members of the Meyrick Society of London to mark their 50th anniversary.
