Description
The Old Water House, located in a field at Rough Hill, is a water house built in the early 18th century. It was designed and constructed for Sir Thomas Parkyns of Bunny Hall. The building features red brick, some blue brick, ashlar, and rubble materials. It has a pyramidal brick roof topped with an ashlar millstone and a rubble plinth. This small, square structure is a single storey with a single bay. The east and west sides have single segmental arched openings at ground level, while each of the east, west, and north sides includes two slit ventilators. The south side features a segmental arched doorway with ashlar hinges and wooden lock blocks. The interior of the building once contained water across the entire floor, likely to a depth of about 2 feet. Sir Thomas Parkyns Bart. (circa 1662-1741) was responsible for significant improvements and rebuilding throughout Bunny, often according to his own designs.
