Description
This is a Second World War Type 22 (FW3/22) pillbox built in 1941, which is part of the airfield defenses for Tollerton Airfield. It is located at the grid reference SK 61611 35840 and is one of 18 pillboxes that still exist around the edge of the airfield.
The pillbox is made of red brick, featuring concrete lintels and a flat concrete roof. It has a hexagonal shape, is partly sunken into the ground, and has an entrance on the west side. The embrasures are oriented towards the airfield and each has a stepped concrete surface designed to act as bullet stops. There is evidence of camouflage, including an earthen bank that has been mounded against the walls and remnants of turf covering the roof. Some of the bricks have eroded, exposing the concrete core of the wall structure.
An internal inspection could not be conducted due to water logging inside.
