Description
This is a Second World War Type 22 pillbox, built in 1941, which is part of the airfield defenses for Tollerton Airfield. It is located at the grid reference SK 61542 36446 and is one of 18 surviving pillboxes around the airfield.
The pillbox is constructed of red brick, featuring concrete lintels and a flat concrete roof. It has a hexagonal shape with an entrance on the north side and embrasures facing southeast towards the airfield. Each embrasure has a stepped brick and concrete surface designed to act as bullet stops.
Inside, there is a central concrete anti-ricochet wall. Concrete shelves extend into the interior from each embrasure, providing support for weapons and allowing for a wide arc of fire.
