Pillbox Square Type at Grid Ref. SK 61959 36756

Building This is a second world war pillbox of 1941 which forms part of the airfield defences of Tollerton Airfield. This pillbox is situated at OS grid reference SK 6195936756 and is one of 18 pillboxes which survive around the periphery of the air field.

Materials and Exterior Constructed of brick with concrete lintels and a flat concrete roof, this large, shell-proof pillbox is described as 'square' but has chamfered corners so appears octagonal in plan. It is surrounded by a discernable earthen bank surviving up to 0.75m high and 0.5m wide. The long, north-eastern side has an entrance at each end protected by a pentice, with an embrasure above. Other embrasures face south towards the airfield and one to the north, each with a stepped concrete surface which would have functioned as bullet stops. The walls are over 1m thick.

Interior No internal inspection was carried out as tree growth prevented access but suspended Turnbull mounts were visible through the embrasures.
