Description

This is a Second World War pillbox built in 1941, part of the airfield defenses for Tollerton Airfield. It is located at the grid reference SK 6195936756 and is one of 18 surviving pillboxes around the airfield.

The pillbox is constructed of brick with concrete lintels and features a flat concrete roof. Although described as 'square', it has chamfered corners, giving it an octagonal appearance. It is surrounded by a noticeable earthen bank that rises up to 0.75 meters high and is 0.5 meters wide. The long northeastern side has an entrance at each end, both protected by a pentice, with an embrasure above each entrance. Other embrasures face south towards the airfield and one to the north, each equipped with a stepped concrete surface that would have acted as bullet stops. The walls of the pillbox are over 1 meter thick.

No internal inspection was conducted due to tree growth blocking access, but suspended Turnbull mounts were visible through the embrasures.
