Description

Building This is a second world war Type 22 (FW3/22) pillbox of 1941 which forms part of the airfield defences of Tollerton Airfield. This pillbox is situated at OS grid reference SK 62167 36757 and is one of 18 pillboxes which survive around the periphery of the air field.

Materials and Exterior Constructed of brick with concrete lintels and a flat concrete roof, this large, shell-proof, pillbox is described as 'square' but has chamfered corners so appears octagonal in plan, with an entrance to the north-west protected by a pentice. The embrasures face south, on to the airfield, each with a stepped brick and concrete surface which would have functioned as bullet stops. The brickwork is slightly different to others in the group, and appears to be of cheaper production and, as a result, is showing signs of weathering and erosion.

Interior An internal inspection was not possible due to tree growth across the entrance but it was clear that Turnbull fittings survive in each embrasure.
