Description

Top Farmhouse is a farmhouse and cottage that has been converted into a single house. It dates from the early 17th century, with some later 17th-century extensions. The structure is primarily built of red brick, featuring some blue brick chequering and render. The right three bays have a plain tile roof and a red brick stack on the former left gable. The single left bay is of later construction, with a lower pantile roof. The building has brick coped gables with kneelers and a rendered plinth, along with a large rendered buttress. There are dentilled brick bands over the ground and first floor openings, which form semi-circular arches.

The farmhouse is two storeys plus a garret and consists of four bays. It has four 20th-century glazing bar casements on the ground floor, with four smaller similar casements above. To the left, there is a single-storey, two-bay wing with a pantile roof, which retains the remains of a similar band at the eaves. This wing features one 20th-century glazing bar casement and one larger similar casement to the left. The earliest part of the building includes a wall plate and four tie plates.

The west elevation has a plain tile roof and a single ridge red brick stack. The right gable is brick coped with a kneeler and similar bands. This elevation has three bays, with a single central small glazing bar casement flanked by larger 20th-century glazing bar casements. Above, there are two smaller similar casements with a single central smaller glazing bar casement. In the garret, there is a single similar casement with a dentilled arched hoodmould, along with four small round tie plates. Attached to the right is a single-storey blank red brick wing with a plain tile roof, featuring a brick coped right gable with a kneeler and similar band.
