Description
12 and 14 London Road are two houses, now used as accountants' offices. They were built in the late 18th century, with mid-19th century additions, and converted to offices in the late 20th century. The buildings are made of brick with stone dressings and have slate roofs.
Number 12, on the right, features first and second floor bands, rebated eaves, and two gable stacks. The windows are glazing bar sashes, with those on the second and third floors having segmental heads, all with rubbed brick heads. The building is four storeys high and has a five-window range, with a central blank on the third and fourth floors. The fourth-floor windows are smaller. The entrance has a central reeded wooden doorcase with an open pediment on brackets, leading to a fielded six-panel door with a blank fanlight, flanked by round-headed scrapers and two windows on either side. At the rear, there is a two-storey wing.
Number 14, on the left, has a plinth and a single gable stack. It is three storeys high with a two-window range of glazing bar French windows, and above are two smaller glazing bar sashes, all with rubbed brick heads. The left side features a late 19th-century canted bay window with plain sashes. To the right, there is a reeded wooden doorcase with an open pediment on curved brackets, leading to a fielded six-panel door and fanlight.
Inside, number 12 has two small dogleg stairs with winders and stick balusters. The right ground floor room has full-height fielded softwood panelling and a late 19th-century slate fireplace flanked by fitted cupboards. Number 14 features a dogleg stone stair with winders and iron stick balusters, altered on the ground floor, while the upper flights have wooden stairs with turned balusters and newels.
