Description

Stenton House is an early 19th-century house. It is constructed of brick and stucco with stone dressings and has hipped and gabled concrete tile roofs. The eaves are chamfered with wooden gutters supported by brackets, and there are two side wall stacks. The house is arranged over two storeys plus attics, with two-storey wings.

The garden front is symmetrical, featuring a pedimented central section. This section contains a French window at ground level, flanked by narrow lights. Above the French window is a renewed Venetian window, and above that, an altered round-headed window. Flanking this central feature are two-storey canted bay windows, each with three plain sash windows on each floor; the upper windows are smaller.

The street front is asymmetrical, with an off-centre pedimented recessed entrance bay featuring a stucco ground floor with a plinth and cornice. The entrance has a central six-panel door flanked by single plain sash windows. Above the door is a plain sash, and above that, a half-round window. The right wing has four windows: three small sashes and one larger sash, all with glazing bars. The off-centre moulded stone doorcase contains a six-panel door and overlight, flanked to the left by two plain sashes and to the right by a larger glazing bar sash. The left wing has a large sash window to the left and a small dummy window to the right, with two plain sashes below.

The house was formerly the home of the historian Sir Frank Stenton.
