Description
The causeway arches and embankment walling, located 50 meters northwest of Trent Bridge in Newark on Trent, were built in 1770 and feature mid-19th century alterations. Designed by John Smeaton, the structure is made of red brick with ashlar dressings. The walling extends for 80 meters along the southwest side of the Great North Road, with buttresses placed at regular intervals. A 30-meter section of the wall curves slightly to the southeast and has ashlar coping. There is a mid-19th century gateway, which was added as an entrance to the cattle market, featuring square brick piers decorated with blue brick and ashlar, along with a pair of iron gates. To the northwest, there is 40 meters of walling that includes nine segmental brick arches (two of which are not visible), which stretch under the road to the northeast, with buttresses in between. The corresponding north wall of this causeway and embankment walling was demolished when the road was widened in the 19th century. This structure is part of the causeway that carries the Great North Road across the floodplain of the River Trent.
