Description

The Clock Tower is an office building dating from around 1860, featuring a prominent clock tower. It is constructed of red brick and render, with ashlar dressings and slate hipped roofs. The building has a moulded band at the first floor and an eaves cornice.

The two-storey office section includes a three-storey clock tower on the northwest side. The southeast riverfront showcases a pair of three-light windows set within an ashlar arcade, which has seven round arches supported by six columns. Above this, there is another pair of similar windows within an arcaded surround. The clock tower is topped with a pyramidal hipped roof that features a continuous dormer window with ten lights and circular glazing on each face, culminating in a tall triple chimney stack.

On the northeast front, there is an off-centre 20th-century doorway, a canted bay window to the left, and a former round-headed doorway to the right, which now has inserted windows beyond two segment-headed windows. Above this, there is another pair of three-light windows within an ashlar arcaded surround. Set back to the right is a round-headed doorway flanked by side lights, with a single round-headed window to the right, and above are a double and a single round-headed window, all featuring moulded ashlar surrounds.

The northwest front has a single blocked doorway in an ashlar surround and an inserted 20th-century doorway to the right, above which is a single round-headed window in an ashlar surround. The southwest front displays two round-headed windows, with a single and a double round-headed window above, plus a pair of three-light windows within an arcaded surround.

Rising from the slightly projecting off-centre bay is a rendered square clock tower with each front articulated by two pairs of Doric pilasters flanking a central round-headed sash window, topped by a full entablature. Above this is an ornate gable featuring a round clock face, and the pyramidal roof has a round-headed lucarne. The entire structure is crowned by an iron balustrade and a flagpole.
