Description
South Muskham Prebend is a former prebendal house, now an old people's home, dating to the mid-15th century. It was remodelled in the early 18th century and around 1800, with a sympathetic rear addition built in 1954. The building began as timber-framed but is now brick, rendered and colourwashed, with stone dressings, and has slate and concrete tile roofs. It is arranged in an H-shape, preserving the form of a central hall with flanking parlour and service wings. The front has a small plinth and coped gables, with two external side wall stacks and two ridge stacks. The windows are glazing bar sashes. A recessed central section features a full-width early 19th-century verandah with cast iron posts and a crest. Beneath the verandah is a 20th-century glazed door to the left, and three windows to the right. A single window is found in each wing.
Inside the left wing is a high-quality 15th-century collar purlin roof with castellated king posts, along with remnants of a timber-framed gable. The central hallway contains an early 18th-century cantilevered staircase with a moulded string, fluted and twisted balusters, and a scrolled handrail. There's rearranged 17th-century panelling with chip carving and four marquetry panels. The right wing, on the first floor, has an Adam-style wooden fireplace with a corniced stone mantel shelf.
The collar purlin roof is a rare feature for the East Midlands. The house was leased from the late 18th century by John Thomas Becher, builder of Hill House, and remained in the Becher family until 1916. It is one of nine remaining prebendal houses formerly attached to Southwell Minster.
