Description

The Old Rectory is a former parsonage house, primarily dating to around 1600, with substantial additions from the 17th, 19th, and 20th centuries. The building is timber-framed, with exposed timbers on the right gable end, render on the left gable end, and a colour-washed brick front. Brick also forms the rear extensions, all covered with plain tiles. It is a building of one storey and attics. A notable feature is an internal chimney stack with four attached square shafts, set diagonally, featuring heavy corbelled heads on moulded rectangular bases. Two large Edwardian dormers have been inserted into the front, displaying moulded bargeboards, applied mock timbering, and casement windows with square leaded panes. On the right, an early 19th-century single-storey canted bay window has three full-length small-paned sash windows in flush frames, topped with a tripartite slate roof. The remaining windows are 20th-century and appear random. The entrance doorway is located in the right rear wing and features an Edwardian plank door with raised pilaster strips and a bracketed flat pediment. Inside, plain studding is exposed, with the original framing divided into three sections. The oldest section is on the right and contains a blocked original window on its interior wall. The central section has an ovolo-moulded main beam with run-out stops. Much of the original rear frame and roof were removed during later extensions. A fine ground floor room on the right retains full-height panelling dating to around 1700, along with a bolection moulded fireplace surround and a decorative panel above. The wall features a string course and ovolo-moulded surrounds to the panels, and a cornice with cymatum and corona.
