Description

The Walnut Tree is a house dating from the early 17th century. It is timber-framed and rendered, with a brick gable end on the left and a thatched roof featuring ornamental ridge and eaves. The building has one and a half storeys and a three-cell layout across four bays. It includes an internal chimney stack made of plain Tudor brick, topped by two arched brick hoods, and a later end stack on the right. The ground floor front has small-paned, two-light casement windows, while the rear features two large dormers added in the 20th century.

There are mid-20th century extensions with whitewashed brick on the right and a two-storey addition at the front that houses an entrance hall and stair. The ground floor shows widely spaced studding. In the right end bay, there are plain ceiling joists, and the upper room has a simple side purlin roof. The central room has clamps pegged to the studs that support the ceiling joists, and it features an open fireplace with a Tudor brick surround and a plain cambered lintel. A slight variation in ceiling heights suggests there may be an older core to the structure. The left end bay is an addition, marked by a gap between the ends of the wall plates, and has thin replacement joists in the ceiling along with a reconstructed fireplace. The original house likely had a two-cell end-chimney form.
