Description
The Sacrista Prebend is a former prebendal house, dating from between 1774 and 1798, and now serving as the headmaster’s house for the Minster School. It incorporates earlier fabric in the rear wings. The building is constructed of brick with a stucco front, stone dressings, and slate roofs. It is designed in a Gothick style to the front elevation. The rear has a partial stone plinth and chamfered eaves. Five gable and two ridge stacks are present. The main front has two gabled wings, each with a transomed triple lancet window, and centrally, a double lancet, all with hood moulds. A central, flat-roofed porch with pierced balustrade features a Tudor arched doorway, flanked by single plain sash windows in lancet openings. Beyond the porch are single canted hipped bay windows with five-light transomed lancets. A rear wing to the north contains two glazing bar sashes on each floor, the lower ones tripartite.
Inside, the entrance hall has a dentilled cornice and a Tudor arch leading to the porch. A dogleg staircase has a cut string, stick balusters, and a scrolled ramped handrail. A front room on the left side features a vine trail frieze, a cornice with oak leaves, and a shallow coved ceiling, alongside an Adam-style wooden fireplace on the south wall. Other front rooms have panelled doors, some of which are in a Gothick style. The building is one of the nine remaining prebendal houses historically associated with Southwell Minster.
