Description
This is a house dating from the 17th century, significantly altered and extended in the 18th and 19th centuries. It is constructed of coursed blue lias rubble and brick with ashlar and stucco dressings. The building comprises three ranges around a central courtyard, with a single-story 19th-century addition on the west side. The west front, dating from the 19th century, features three bays and two storeys plus attics. A projecting bay is located off-centre, topped with a modillioned open pediment. Flanking this bay are single 19th-century canted bay windows, each with three plain sashes and pitched slate roofs. The central doorcase is moulded with scrolled brackets supporting a hood over a six-panelled door and rectangular overlight. A round-headed sash window with a stucco lintel and keystone sits above the door, flanked to the north by three plain sashes and to the south by two, all with segmental heads. Dormers, each with two-light Yorkshire sashes, are above. The north range, two storeys high with two bays, incorporates two 18th-century glazing bar sashes in segmental heads. A 19th-century conservatory, single-story and four bays in length, is built of brick with timber framing. It has a canted hipped south end with round-headed lights featuring margin panes and a decorative roof finial. A boundary wall, dating from the 18th and 19th centuries, runs along the High Street, constructed of coursed blue lias rubble and brick with a terra-cotta coping. The wall is approximately 100 meters long, rising from 12 courses to 25 courses at the north end. A set of ornate double cast iron gates stand on square cast iron piers with cushion capitals and pyramidal caps. A matching iron wicket gate is located to the south.
