Description
A row of four early 19th-century houses, now used as shops and flats, is located on Barnby Gate in Newark on Trent. The brick building features a pantile roof, a partial plinth, bands marking the first and second floors, and dentillated eaves with two ridge stacks. It is three storeys high and originally had a five-window range of plain sash windows, although the window on the left has been replaced with a 20th-century casement. Above this are smaller, similarly-styled windows, consisting of two sashes and three casements; all have segmental heads. The central entrance is chamfered and round-headed, with a close-boarded door. To the right are two late 19th-century shopfronts with two-light shop windows, flanked by recessed glazed doors and cornices supported on brackets. The left shopfront has a 20th-century fascia. To its left is a rendered 20th-century shopfront with a segment-headed glazed door and overlight, and to the far left, a simpler late 19th-century shopfront with a single window and a recessed door. This property is included on the list for its contribution to the group value of the area.
