Description

51-53 Stodman Street consists of two dwellings built in the 18th century, with the ground floor converted into four retail units in the 20th century.

The buildings are made of brick and feature timber shopfronts and sash windows beneath a clay pantile roof. They have a linear layout, with the main facade facing northeast.

The principal facade has five bays and rises four storeys, with four shop units on the ground floor. To the west, there is an infilled passageway made of painted brick, which includes a slim sash window. The shopfronts vary: to the east, there is a late 20th-century metal and plastic shopfront with a recessed double-glazed door and two single-pane windows beneath a continuous fascia above stallrisers. To the west, the shopfront is a late 19th-century wooden design featuring a dentillated cornice (partially obscured by timber signage), a central recessed glazed door, a single-pane window to the west, and a three-light window to the west above stallrisers.

On the first floor, the principal elevation has five windows. Number 51 features two two-over-two sash windows, a blocked window, and a smaller two-over-two window in the center, while number 53 has two six-over-six sash windows. The second floor of number 51 has two two-over-two sash windows and a central blocked window, with number 53 displaying two six-over-six sash windows to the right. The third floor has five windows, all with four-over-eight sash windows and no blocked window. All windows have segmental heads. The buildings are topped with a pantile roof that has two central stacks visible.
