Description
Northgate House is a late 18th-century house, with extensions built in the early 19th century, located in Newark on Trent. It is constructed of brick with stone and stucco dressings, and has a roof that is not visible. The exterior features sill bands to the basement and first floor, a first-floor band, a modillion eaves cornice, a plain parapet with five blank panels, and three ridge stacks and one side wall stack. The front elevation has five windows, each with glazing bar sashes and multi-keystone lintels. A central flight of steps, with 20th-century brick cheeks, leads to an early 19th-century doorcase featuring a multi-keystone lintel and a hood on consoles. The half-glazed door has an overlight, and is flanked by two sash windows. The basement has two blank windows to the left and two casements to the right. To the left of the main house is a single-story addition with a ramped coped gable and one sash window. To the right is a ramped coped boundary wall with a panelled doorway. Behind this wall is a set-back three-story addition, matching the style of the main block, with three windows. The rear elevation has three sashes to the left and two larger sashes to the right on the first floor; above, there are five sashes. A central doorcase and door, similar to the front, are flanked by a larger sash to the left and a half-glazed door to the right. To the right is a 19th-century canted brick bay window with a parapet and glazing bar sashes. The east side features five blank windows on each floor and a single-story addition with a segment-headed door to the left; above it is a triangular group of pigeon holes.
The interior includes an open-well staircase with a ramped and scrolled handrail, vase and stem balusters, an enriched moulded cornice and a panelled dado, and two fielded 6-panel doors with eared and shouldered architraves. Round-headed doorcases with keystones and fanlights are present in the landing and stairwell. Principal rooms have enriched cornices. The house contains two early cast iron fireplaces with a Classical design, and a mid-19th-century cast iron fireplace painted to resemble marble.
To the northeast of the house is an adjoining boundary wall, approximately 25 meters long, constructed of brick with ramped stone coping.
