Description
The Chestnuts is a house located in Newark on Trent, dating from the late 17th century, with alterations and additions made in the early and late 19th century, as well as the late 20th century. The building is constructed from lias limestone rubble and brick, featuring brick dressings and a pantile roof. It has a first-floor band, dentillated eaves, and two coped gables, along with two gable stacks and a single ridge stack.
The house is two storeys high with attics and has a four-window range. The upper floor has four renewed glazing bar sash windows, and there are two gabled dormers above with plain sashes. The entrance features an off-centre 20th-century brick doorcase with a moulded wooden round head, a fielded six-panel door, and an inscribed fanlight. To the left of the door is a segment-headed glazing bar sash window, and to the right is a canted 19th-century bay window with a rubble plinth and glazing bar sashes. The right gable displays an insurance plaque. At the rear, there is a two-storey addition from the 19th century with segment-headed windows, and the rear wing features leaded cross casements along with two renewed gabled dormers.
