Description

Transport House consists of two houses that have been converted into architects' offices. They were built in the late 17th century, with alterations made in the late 19th and late 20th centuries. The structure is made of brick with stone dressings and features hipped and gabled roofs covered in concrete tiles and pantiles.

The building has a first-floor band, quoins, wooden modillioned eaves, and a gutter supported by brackets. It has a single coped gable and features two ridge stacks and one gable stack. The building is two storeys high with attics and has a four-window range. The windows are primarily glazing bar sashes, including three gable-headed and one segment-headed sash. Above the main windows, there are four hipped dormers with two-light casements.

On the ground floor, to the left, there is an off-centre wooden doorcase with curved brackets supporting a flat hood, leading to a fielded six-panel door with a fanlight. This door is flanked by single gable-headed sashes. To the right, there is a similar doorcase with a fanlight inscribed "Transport House," flanked by two late 19th-century canted bay windows with brick plinths and plain sashes.

The left side of the building, facing Town Wharf, has three windows arranged in a 2:1 pattern: two sashes on the left and a larger single sash on the right, all of which are segment-headed. Above, there are two hipped dormers with Yorkshire sashes, and below, three gable-headed sashes.

Inside, there is a late 17th-century oak staircase featuring splat balusters, a moulded handrail, and square newels with capitals and drops. The principal rafter roof has butt purlins and collars, with much of the timber being reused.
