Description

This is a group of three houses at 40-44 Castlegate, Newark on Trent, dating to the late 16th and early 17th centuries, with significant alterations in the mid-19th century. The houses are timber-framed with a brick underbuild and a brick gable on the left-hand side; the first floor is rendered. They have steep-pitched pantile roofs. A continuous, jettied first floor is a prominent feature, along with a coped gable on number 44. Gable and ridge stacks are present.

Number 44, the leftmost house, is taller and has a plain sash window. To the right are two Yorkshire sash windows, with 3 and 2 lights respectively. On the ground floor to the left is a plank door with a Gothic-headed scraper, flanked to its left by a plain sash window with beaded shutters. To the right of the plank door is a close-boarded door, and to its right a 2-light Yorkshire sash window. Further right is a 20th-century replica glazing bar bow window.
