Description
Sampson's Lane Farmhouse and the adjoining barn are a farmhouse and barn complex dating from the late 15th century, with mid 18th century and early 19th century alterations, as well as modifications from the 19th and 20th centuries. The buildings feature a cruck frame, coursed rubble, and ashlar with ashlar dressings, topped with slate and corrugated asbestos roofs. There are two gable stacks, one made of brick and the other of stone. The farmhouse, located on the left, was refronted in the mid 18th century and is two storeys high, with a two-window range of 20th century two-light plastic-framed casements. The central door is from the 20th century and has a heavy stone surround, with a two-light casement with stone flush mullions to the left and a smaller two-light casement with a stone lintel to the right. The right gable of the farmhouse shows an exposed pair of crucks with a span beam, pegged ridge, and collar, all set on a late 18th century brick plinth, with wattle and daub infill. Inside, there are two similar pairs of crucks, which have been dated by dendrochronology to the 15th century. The barn, located to the right, features an off-centre plank loft door, and below it, there is a wide stable door with a wooden frame, flanked by a smaller board door on the right. The roof structure of the barn was renewed in the late 19th century.
