Description

The Dunham-on-Trent, Ragnall and Darlton War Memorial is a war memorial unveiled in 1921, designed by Sharpe and Hoggard of Retford. It features a 4-meter high Latin cross made of Aberdeen granite, with the cross-head adorned with carved draped laurel leaves, a cap, and ammunition pouches at the top of a square-sectioned shaft. This shaft rises from a plinth that has trefoil-headed grey slate tablets on all four sides, each with incised gold lettering.

Originally, only the front tablet (northwest face) was inscribed with the names of those from Dunham parish who fell in the First World War. After the Second World War, the left side tablet (northeast face) was added, listing those lost in that conflict. In 1998, the right side tablet (southwest face) was inscribed with the names of those from the nearby village of Ragnall who fell in the First World War. Subsequently, the rear tablet (southeast face) was inscribed with the names of those from the village of Darlton who also fell in the First World War. The plinth stands on a three-stepped square base.

The inscriptions include on the front: "LEST WE FORGET/ TO THE GLORY OF GOD, AND IN GRATEFUL MEMORY OF THE MEN WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR 1914-1918" (15 names) / "THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVERMORE"; on the left side: "LEST WE FORGET / TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND TO THE MEMORY OF THE MEN WHO FELL IN THE SECOND WORLD WAR, 1939-1945" (3 names) / "THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVERMORE"; on the right side: "LEST WE FORGET / TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND IN GRATEFUL MEMORY OF THE MEN OF RAGNALL WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR, 1914-1918" (5 names); and on the rear: "LEST WE FORGET / TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND IN GRATEFUL MEMORY OF THE MEN OF DARLTON WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR, 1914-1918" (5 names).
