Description

The garden walls, fountains, summer houses, and other ornaments located to the south and east of Welbeck Abbey date from the mid to late 19th century. These features extend along the main gardens, with the eastern gardens being terraced. The southern and part of the eastern sides are bordered by a balustraded wall built on a rock face ashlar base, which is interrupted by decorative iron gates.

In the south garden, there is a large fountain made of copper, marble, and ashlar, adorned with cherubs, garlands, and mythical heads. The terraced garden, separated by similar balustraded walls, includes several urns and figures made of lead and ashlar set on piers. Notably, there are five large decorated terracotta urns and several curved, decorated ashlar seats. The prominent fountain of copper and ashlar features cherub heads and is topped with a figure and a swan.

On the north side, there are two summer houses. The western summer house features a curved colonnade with a triglyph and dentil cornice. The second summer house has a semi-circular plan, a gabled copper roof supported by outer rock face ashlar piers and inner wooden columns, and includes a central wooden arch with a keystone and decorative ironwork.
