Description
The Normanton on Trent War Memorial is a granite structure unveiled in 1921, designed by Sharpe and Hoggard of Retford. It features a short obelisk topped with a small laurel wreath in relief, standing on a plinth that rests on a three-stepped base. The front (east face) of the obelisk has an inscription in lead lettering that reads: "TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND IN GLORIOUS MEMORY OF THE YOUNG MEN OF THIS PARISH WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR 1914-1918," followed by the names of nine individuals. The plinth bears the inscription: "GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN/ THAN THIS, THAT A MAN/ LAY DOWN HIS LIFE FOR HIS FRIENDS. ST JOHN 15.13." Additionally, the south face of the plinth includes another leaded inscription commemorating one man who lost his life in the Second World War.
