Description
No. 40 Chapelgate is an early 19th-century building that stands two storeys tall, constructed of brick with a brick eaves cornice and a hipped pantile roof. The façade features three windows with brick voussoirs and stucco keystones, all of which are hung sashes with glazing bars. On the ground floor, there is one round-arched window, which is currently blocked, and a canted bay window to the right. The central doorway is round-headed and made of stone, complete with a keystone, impost blocks, a fielded door, and a radiating semi-circular fanlight, accessed by three steps. There are one-storey wings on both sides of the building, each with one window; the left window is blocked, while the right features a later round-headed arch with a keystone. No. 40 Chapelgate and No. 42 form a group.
