Description
The Lion Hotel and Restaurant is an 18th-century inn that has been converted into a hotel. It features irregularly coursed ashlar that is colourwashed, topped with a hipped slate roof. The building has a stone plinth, rusticated quoins, a fascia board with iron cresting, a second-floor band, moulded ashlar architraves, and a single roof stack. It stands three storeys high with attics and has four bays.
The facade includes a four-bay arcade supported by Doric columns. On the left side, there are six plain sash windows, while the right side features a carriage entry with barred close-boarded gates. Above the arcade, there are four glazing bar sashes and a central wrought iron sign bracket. Above this, there are four similar sashes, and above again, two flat-roofed dormers, each with a glazing bar casement. Below the carriage entry is a large 19th-century segmental-headed doorway with a moulded hood on curved brackets, which contains a doorkeeper's recess.
Inside, the hotel has hewn span beams and joists, an irregular early 19th-century dog-leg staircase, remains of a stud wall, and an original roof with halved ridge and tenoned purlins. There is also a long early 19th-century rear wing, although it is noted to be of no special interest.
