Description
No. 118 on Bridge Street, formerly known as the Royal Hotel, is a shop built around 1900 in the Domestic Revival style. The building is constructed of brick with ashlar dressings and decorative bands. It features a large coped gable with a shaped head, strapwork, and a finial, along with a single sidewall stack. The structure has four storeys and three bays.
The facade includes a full-width two-storey recess. On the left side, there is a canted bay window with Ipswich glazing bars and four casements. To the right, there is a round-headed doorway with a half-glazed door. Above this, a bracketed balcony with a wrought iron balustrade displays the words 'Royal Hotel', and there is a large semi-circular window with a central glazed door. Further up, there are three sashes with glazing bar heads and prominent keystones, linked by semi-circular pediments. Above these, there are three similar sashes with linked pediments, the central one raised, and two intermediate pilasters above them. The building is included in the listing for its group value.
