Description

The Tuxford War Memorial is a war memorial that was unveiled in 1921, designed and built by H J Tuttell. It features a dark polished granite Latin cross, which was added in 1999, rising from a tapering hexagonal plinth made of the same material. The plinth has an inscription that runs around three faces, which reads: "IN THANKSGIVING TO/ ALMIGHTY GOD/ FOR/ VICTORY/ AND IN GRATEFUL MEMORY OF THE/ MEN OF TUXFORD/ WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES FOR THEIR COUNTRY/ AND THE WORLD'S FREEDOM IN THE/ GREAT WAR, 1914 - 1918./ GRANT THEM THY PEACE, LORD./ ERECTED/ BY THE RESIDENTS OF/ TUXFORD." The plinth also lists the 16 names of those who died in the First World War, as well as the seven who were lost in the Second World War.

The plinth stands on a three-stepped octagonal limestone base, which is topped by a black polished granite double plinth and cross. Four shields are carved in relief on the corners of the plinth, with the inscriptions PRO DEO, PRO RECTO, PRO PATRIA, and PRO REGE.
