Description
Hangars 1 and 2 at K and M Hauliers are aircraft hangars built in 1916, now serving as a storage depot. The structure is made of brick and rendered, featuring segmental arched timber Belfast truss roofs. The side walls are buttressed, and the windows consist of metal glazing bar casements. The hangars have a rectangular plan, measuring 15 bays long and two spans wide, each spanning 100 feet.
Each side includes a single-storey lean-to service building. On the north side, there are six 20th-century casements and two doors, along with a single side wall stack. The south side mirrors this with four similar casements and two doors. Above these, each side has 13 additional casements. Each end of the hangars features multiple metal-clad full-width sliding doors, flanked by single two-bay arcades with corbelled arches that allow the doors to retract. The roof ends include louvred openings, and the felted roof has a full-length gabled clerestory.
Inside, there is a central arcade with 13 bays, supported by segmental arches and corbelled piers. Each side has five segmental arched blocked openings and two doors. The roof is supported by laminated wood lattice-braced trusses with gusseted struts at the abutments, along with three braced spine beams and diagonal boarded covering on longitudinal stringers. This building features a unique construction method designed to create a large clear span suitable for accommodating aircraft.
