Description
Hangars 3 and 4 at K and M Hauliers are aircraft hangars built in 1916, now used as a storage depot, with minor alterations made in the mid-20th century. The structure is made of brick and rendered, featuring segmental arched timber Belfast truss roofs. The side walls are buttressed, and the windows consist of metal glazing bar casements. The hangars have a rectangular plan, measuring 15 bays long and two spans of 100 feet wide.
On the north side, there is a single-storey lean-to service building that includes an external side wall stack, five mid-20th century casements, and a door. To the right, there is a mid-20th century lean-to single bay store with a door. The south side features three doors and nine blocked segmental-headed openings, with 13 casements above on each side. Each end of the hangars has multiple metal-clad full-width sliding doors, flanked by single two-bay arcades with corbelled segmental arches that allow the doors to retract. The roof ends have louvred openings, and the felted roof includes a full-length gabled clerestory.
Inside, there is a central arcade with 13 bays, featuring blocked openings and corbelled piers. The roof is supported by laminated wood lattice braced trusses with gusseted struts at the abutments, along with three braced spine beams and diagonal boarded covering on longitudinal stringers. This building showcases a novel construction method designed to create a large clear span suitable for accommodating aircraft.
