Description
The South Pair of Aircraft Hangars is an attached pair of hangars constructed with brick walls and broad segmental roofs made of corrugated material. The east and west side walls feature stepped brick piers, with 15 bays of rendered walling in between. Each bay has high-level small pane metal windows. Lean-to sheds made of brick are centrally located on both side elevations.
The northern and southern entrance sides have fixed metal sheeting that replaces the original sliding doors. The northern end includes metal sliding double doors that lead into each hangar. At both ends of the entrance sides, there are brick-built housings for sliding doors, which consist of two tall brick arches between buttresses.
The hangars are supported by curved Belfast type lattice roof trusses that rest on brick piers. These trusses are reinforced longitudinally with tie-beams and braces, and feature zig-zag bracing in the end bays. The central wall dividing the pair of hangars is made of brick piers connected by a brick wall with segmental relieving arches. The entrance end sheeting is held up by a wooden framework with metal bracing.
