Description

Old Marsh Farm is a large L-shaped two-storey farmhouse built in the 18th century. It features a west range at the front and a south range, constructed of brick beneath a shallow hipped slate roof, with three brick stacks positioned behind the ridge. Architectural details include wide boarded eaves, a dressed stone plat band, and a plinth. The windows are 16-pane hornless sashes with wedge lintels and stone sills. The front has a symmetrical three-window layout with a central round-arched entrance, which includes a stone doorcase with a rusticated arch and keystone. Inside the door is a half-glazed panelled door topped by an overlight with radial glazing bars.

The north gable end of the west range features a 16-pane sash window on each storey. The south range has an asymmetrical four-window layout, with an eared stone doorcase to the right of centre that contains a glazed and panelled door beneath a four-pane overlight. The sashes in this range match those elsewhere, although the right-hand bay has blind windows.

At the rear, there is a three-sided courtyard, with the east side formed by a later kitchen wing. The north elevation of the south range has a three-window layout: the ground floor features a panelled door beneath a stone lintel, flanked by wide 20-pane sashes, all under a continuous slate-covered lean-to porch. The upper storey has three 16-pane sashes similar to the front. The east elevation of the west range includes a narrow full-height unit with a hipped roof at the angle of the two ranges, which has a panelled door and small sashes on the right and upper storey. There is also a similar single-storey unit adjoining to the right, which has a small sash window. The kitchen wing is single-storey with a brick ridge stack, featuring a boarded door on the left, a three-light wooden casement on the right, and another entrance at the right end. This wing is part of a former carriage and stable range that has been converted into accommodation.

The interior was not seen during the survey.
