Description

The Arabella Aufrere Temple is a garden temple built around 1787, possibly designed by James Wyatt. It is constructed of ashlar red brick and features a slate roof with lead dressings and lead roofs. The front has three bays, with a central entrance leading to the rear cella chamber. A central arch springs from paired Roman Doric columns, with additional single columns on either side that have similar antae at the corners. The central arch rises to a pediment, and there are garlanded paterae in the spandrels of the arch. The centerpiece is flanked by balustraded parapets topped with urns. Above the inner door, there is an inscription that reads: "Dedicated by veneration and affection to the memory of Arabella Aufrere, with a grateful sense of the many virtuous sentiments imbibed often on this spot from her highly cultivated mind." The floors are flagged with diamond patterns at the joints. The rear cella chamber features hemispherically headed niches in its flanking walls, and above the inner doorway is a Coade stone tablet depicting a weeping figure. The rear elevation has seated lions at the ends of the cornice, while the side walls are made of rendered brick, and the two flat flanking roofs are covered in lead.
